when i was a kid i went to Billy Casper's junior camp in Chula Vista and he told us golf was, and i quote "a combination PALM and finger grip". the Golden Bear also said "if i was going to hit you with the back of my left hand, i would NOT flick you with my fingers, i would use the back of my PALM"

have to say i've been terrible for gripping the club too hard...always felt as though i may end up letting go. But softening the grip really helped. Similarly, i have a tendency to hold the club in my palm instead of fingers. Fixed that up and the swing feels free and smooth and the balls go further and truer.

Wow, thank you so much! I seriously have never been able to hit a consistent straight shot with my driver so far since I started golfing, which was about 2-3 years ago. And so today I was just bored and wanted to fix my driver, and my grip has always felt good, but i just could never make good contact. But, what I was doing wrong was my left palm was gripping the club not my fingers. And this vid. really helped me! I was hitting 225-250 consistently straight today! Thanks!!

@durs6...I agree with you to an extent that some have it.But those who don't unfortunately are constantly getting bad instruction, learning from folks who don't understand the fundamentals of the swing.The vid explained what 90% of amateurs do and it is not a quick fix.I believe that this video should be viewed as many times as possible.Usage of the tee is an excellent way to see if you are doing it right. You need to do some soul searching & figure out the source of ur negativity. Bruised ego?

Releasing the clubface will certainly minimize slice as clubface position is the primary influence of direction. I think this is a quick fix and should be thought of if your ball is consistantly curving and finishing well to the right of target. However, I think that swing path needs to be given some thought at this stage. It's because their path is out-to-in that the golfer has taught themselves not to release the club in the first place.

this is so crap just watch dalton mcreary teach golf its easy. i hit 348 yds 80% with 14% slice 16 yds variance and 6% hook. 20 yds. i play scratch and win a lot of comps. i also hit a tennis serve at 129 mph. your either born with it or your not, + plus 30 years practising. learn your limitations and be happy playing crap. the worst thing to do is to watch pro golfers and try to emulate them. when really your playing like a 12 year old girl. The guy is right, but there is timing in every other sport. I agree it's a feeling. The easiest way to learn a good release it to take a divot (big divot) in front of the ball. The only way to do this is to keep your head BEHIND the ball. That is what allows u to release the club in front of the ball. Cheers!

This scene was inserted into the broadcast version of "Caddyshack". I know, because it was in the version I recorded like, 20 years ago, off of TV. I guess they had to remove the sex scenes and needed filler. There's also another clip where Danny drops his mom off at church, which ends with his mom gesturing to Danny's departing car with a gesture and posture that mimics the statue of Mary right next to her. Hey MillBelater, You're right. I read that despite having done Caddyshack together, they weren't chummy. Definitely some friction there as Billy replaced Chevy on SNL after the first season and he was a hit with SNL fans. Sometimes friction can work like when Ty's working on his game at night and plays through Carl's place and he turns him on to his own brand of grass and gives him wine. What's the deal with this? Jones, Nicklaus, and even Woods all use their legs to drive through impact. Nicklaus has said that a good golfer uses his upper body to make good swings... but a great golfer begins his swing from the feet up... (I am paraphrasing)... Any thoughts out there? I am a single digit and swing old school...I am considered a good iron player and ball striker, but people do mention that I have a lot of lower body motion. I would like your opinions and comments.

I agree with the role of the legs. Set them up,keep left arm pit tucked in, head still either behind or over the ball, this stops overswinging and less should turn. Look at Goggins swing in the 09 British Open. Simple. All the tour pros keep theri head still which is key.

it works for me so it could work for you possibly, this is my badass pops' advice: "left elbow locked, kind of left open a little, right elbow tucked in through the hit with ur head down, and then finish high no matter what"..i figured out that ur weight needs to move forward towards the ball maybe, but still stay weighted on ur heels that definitely helps

Well, first thing's first. The length of the backswing has little to no significance to how well or far you hit. Take Arney Palmer. His BS is considerably short, and he hit the ball very well. What is improtant is that you get the club into the 'slot'. Which is basically the area before and after impact when the club is parallel to the ground. You do that and you'll be well off. As for what makes you hit far, proper timing and wrist break, along with a full hip turn can do wonders for distance.

I'm the one who's not just can hit it long but also can play other shot well too. My recovery shot are my best effort of all shots. I'm working on improving my ld swing and driver's accuracy. There's a one time that i hit 333 yards but without any sign out of it just so relax so smooth,really effortless... and i'm not even at the top of my backswing. driving long distances means you can select a higher approach club (and thus have more control on your approaches). I'm a weekend hacker and I know myself Id rather approach with a 9 than a 6 or 7 purely from knowing the 9 will stop on a dime, the 6 or 7 will pitch and roll (sometimes thats good) but more often than not i want the ball to stop where I placed it. just my 2cents worth... long-ass drives do have their place! :)

Hey, I know several guys who can hit their drives 300+ yds. That doesn't mean they're great. Some of them can't hit their irons and wedges at all, and a couple of them can't chip or putt to save their lives. They either duff their approaches or 3-4 putt. All they do is hit drivers on the range and it shows. I am their foil. I can hit my wedges and irons well, and I can putt well. I just have a tough time getting off the tee. I find myself using a 5 or 7 wood. Which i still ain't that good with.

Chest to the target, wtf. well ofcourse it will be pointing towards the target eventually, but you need to feeling of keeping your shoulders square to the target to keep your angles and release the club, getting a much more solid impact position. Turn your shoulders and swing your arms from the top. 175 in fairway VS 250 in rough is definetly a tough one, depending on what kind of shot you got an the hole and the lie in the rough.

You are correct, size has little to do with distance. Alot of the distance comes from that 'wiplash' effect as your hips are moving through your swing. You hips should be about 3/4 turned toward your target as the clubface comes in contact with the ball. There are a lot of similaries to a baseball swing and a good golf swing.

um its not about the big moucles or how strong you are.. its about perfect connection with the ball. im not a golf expert or anything but im 16 and i outdrive grown men 180-230 pounds and i shoot mid to high 80's which isnt bad, and great practice i do is stand with my feet together and hit the ball because if u think about all the power and momentum should come from your shoulders and the breaking of the wrist right at the ball

actually, I am quite correct. I'm 5' 4'', 110 pounds, and I can strike the ball 230 yards with my 3 wood consistently, 5 iron 165 yards consistently, my 7 iron 140 yards consistently, 9 iron 120 yards consistently, etc... These distances are all an outcome of a near perfect swing. If this golfer above learned the correct fundamentals of the swing, I'm sure he could strike the ball MUCH further, but right now, he is limited on distance based on his sloppy swing

thats a pretty terrible swing...you picked up your hands, no hip-shoulder load, and the club was WAY past parallel. You also shifted your weight on the down swing instead of rotating around the ball. With that swing, your simply relying on muscle, not technique. Remember, brains over brawn

It can. One of many factors that can cause a slice is poor posture. You might be standing too close to the ball which makes it hard for your chest to rotate and the club have plenty of room to swing out to the ball. This would cause you to cut across the ball (or swing out to in as it is called) and slice. But people like Jim Furyk are perfectly comfortable standing close to the ball, but they make compensations later in the swing to "catch up" Hence his weird looking swing.

Higher kick point in the shaft, less loft on the clubface, low spin golf ball, and a higher CG on the clubface. If you are having to hit UP on the ball to reduce spin then I would say your equipment is not properly fit. If you are trying to be a long drive champion who tee's it up 5 inches off the ground, then sure hitting up with a 6 degree lofted driver makes sense. Hitting up with a 12-10 degree lofted driver is just destructive to a good swing.

i never knew the driver swing was different from the iron swing before viewing this video 9 months ago. i used to hit down on the ball and my ball flight was a very low hook. after using these tips, my ballflight is ideal and i can now hit my driver 280-305. thanks Steve for the great video!

Golf can be extremely frustrating especially when the ball doesnt go straight, like the video says check your grip, make sure you are twisting your wrists correctly as you hit through the ball. follow through is also very important. It might be an idea to film yourself so you can see for yourself what is causing the slice.

as long as you are disciplined enough. you don't have to keep your left arm straight the entire back swing, many have to keep it straight since they can't re-straighten it on the down swing. i find bending my arm slightly on the backswing makes for a more natural swing. will be different for everyone, though. just don't think that "your arm has to be straight 100% of the swing". that is fiction

If you don't get your hands through impact at the right time, (too far behind the rest of your swing), or you don't follow through all the way, (slowing the club down after contact), this could cause a massive slice, a macaroni noodle of a shot. My older bro has the same issue. I'm trying to help him with it. So far, he's hitting it a lot straighter since I had him hit half golf shots with the emphasis on timing of all of his swing's elements, and the importance of a complete follow through.

Straight left arm isnt necessary on your backswing. Most golfers cant physically maintain a straight left arm throughout a proper backswing. I'm 55, compete in long driving, and drive the ball 325. Best advice I ever got was to worry more about a proper turn and dont get hung up on a straight left arm. If you want to worry about your left arm - make sure its straight at impact.

I love the video but the 2008/2007 comparison in the beginning I'm not so sure how accurate it is. When he's hitting from the rough Tiger has said he keeps more of his weight on his front foot to help him hit down on the ball. That may be why his head did not move that much. I'm not saying you're wrong or anything, just offering a different interpretation. :)
